"I hope we passed the audition"

In a year in which two British writers have asked me for input for books on the London 1977 New Wave scene (in which, for better or worse, I found myself involved), I failed the audition for a Majorcan cabaret act. I thought it might be a good proposition for organic real time bass practice, but as hard as I try to be one of these new 21st century British optimists, the thought of playing Sting and/or Jamiroquai songs - even just for practice, was depressing me.

Anyway, I shall try to cast my mind back and come up with some concise observations of that strangest of times.

National Minimum Wage

The national minimum wage is a classic case of something not being what it seems. Now whole employment sectors exploit workers by inevitably paying the NMW whatever the country may be. I live in Europe, so this is aimed at the countries that make up the same. Now, what has this got do do with music? nothing and everything - what has art got to do with anything? - only you can answer that.
